What is Emergent Literacy ?
"Emergent literacy is a term first used by Marie Clay to describe how young children interact with books and when reading and writing, even though they could not read or write in the conventional sense. A vast amount of research has since been done within the fields of psychology, child development, education, linguistics, and sociology. Emergent literacy is a gradual process that takes place over time from birth - until a child can read and write in what we consider to be a conventional sense. A key to the term literacy is the interrelatedness of all parts of language: speaking, listening, reading, writing, and viewing. It is never too early to begin reading to a child."
When we began brainstorming for our Emergent Literacy class project, we knew we wanted it to be technology based. We decided that we would find free online resources and activities for emergent literacy learners and evaluate them. We wanted to somehow share these reviews with the class. We thought that a blog would be the best way to share this information for several reasons. One reason we decided to publish this on the web is because this blog can now be used as a resource for teachers world-wide rather than just those in the class ! Also, blogs can be easily updated, added to and edited! We invite others to give reviews of their favorite (or least favorite) free emergent literacy websites. How did we evaluate these sites?
We evaluated them by exploring each resource and using the activities the website offers. We looked specifically at content, usability and appropriateness. We also tried to highlight some of the most noteworthy activities on each site as well as some negatives about the each one as well.
